The gameplay balance is changed with the addition of new moves, altered moves, brand new combos, and the ability to start chain combos from different situations. A new collectible-hunting mode called Shao Kahn's Lost Treasures is unlocked after finishing the main campaign or winning a Tournament. For the fans of solo play, this title adds a new Master difficulty that is suitable only for the masters of fighting games. The new gameplay options include the introduction of the 2-on-2 tag mode and a brand new eight-player Tournament mode. As an added bonus, hidden fighter Smoke can be unlocked via a pre-match code. The roster of playable characters includes all the members of the original MK 3 game, with four additional fighters (Jade, Kitana, Reptile, and Scorpion), with three new characters being added post-launch (Mileena, Ermac, and Classic Sub-Zero). Immediately after its release, this game managed to attract considerable attention from the worldwide media and audience.
